The organic food business is booming not only in the United States, but in Europe as well. In fact, since the 1990's there has been a worldwide growth rate of approximately 20% per year in the organic industry. alt
More consumers are choosing to purchase certified organic foods not because of “what’s in them,” but because of “what’s not in them” like pesticides, herbicides, hormones and antibiotics. Many consumers perceive foods produced organically as being safer and more nutritious than conventionally produced foods. Recent food scares and growing concern about the environment has also stimulated an increase in the demand for organically grown foods.

Initially, there was confusion over what the term “organic” foods meant. In 1990, Congress responded by establishing standards for organic foods in the Farm Bill. In 1993, additional legislation enacted the Organic Foods Production Act. Under this legislation, organic foods cannot be fertilized with sewer sludge, irradiated, grown from genetically modified seed, or contain genetically modified ingredients. Land cannot have synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides for three years prior to organic foods being grown there. Animals cannot be raised in confinement conditions; cannot be given antibiotics or hormones; and must be fed products that are 100% organic.
